Due to high levels of calcium and magnesium, many types of equipment fail to work properly, which can lead to an increase in energy costs and/or complete failure of the equipment. Many plants use water softeners for boiler feed, cooling towers, entire water supply and various types of process water.

Water softeners are used to reduce the concentration of calcium and magnesium in water. Due to these high concentrations, there is a larger risk of incrustation sediment on an appliance’s piping. This can damage the installation.

A water softener consists of a resin and brine tank. The resin tank is filled with artificial resin to which sodium ions are attached. An ion exchange takes place in case of a calcium and magnesium based fluid stream. The calcium and magnesium ions are bound to the resin and the sodium ions are separated from the water. The resin gets saturated after a while and regeneration needs to take place: a brine solution flows from the salt tank through the resin tank, exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions and prepares the resin again for use.

Decarbonisation system

Decarbonisation (i.e. a special form of partial desalination) is designed to remove carbonate hardnesses in water. This is obtained by employing a special cation resin which exclusively removes the momentary hardness, which is the one that forms scale.
